Pave It Forward – what does this mean for Saline?

The Pave It Forward Campaign, organized by Saline Main Street, the City of Saline, and the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce, is a call to action to remind our community to shop in Saline and continue to visit Saline-based businesses throughout the 2016 road construction and streetscape improvement project and beyond.

But at the heart of the matter, it’s also about being kind to your neighbors.  The basic premise is that by doing good things now for others, maybe enduring some temporary inconveniences, eventually good things will come to you.  Good things like smooth, newly paved roads, improved traffic flow and pedestrian safety, a modernized water and sewer infrastructure, an even more beautiful streetscape in our downtown setting, and thriving downtown businesses that bring commerce, convenience and culture to our community.  You are ‘paying in advance’ for things that will pay you back as Saline paves the road toward its future.

Saline businesses are unique enterprises that contribute to the character of our community — they create a web of economic and social interaction that links us together as neighbors. There are many reasons to ‘shop local,’ but the following statistics really prove it:

  • For every $1.00 spent at a locally owned business, $0.73 remains in the local economy.
  • For every $1.00 spent at a non-locally owned business, $0.43 remains local.
  • For every $1.00 spent online, $0.0 remains local.

We can all make a difference by being kind to our neighbors and fellow motorists during construction, and by supporting our local businesses, now and in the future. What will you do to Pave It Forward and start a ripple effect of good deeds in Saline?
